The Solution

CCTV for High Value Goods

Inside the warehouse, the key areas attract particular attention: They are viewed by Dedicated Micros functional domes, Samsung and Xeno Static Day night high resolution CCTV cameras (SDN550p), fitted with Vista varifocal lenses (VDD35V814). These allow extremely high definition images to be generated regardless of light levels in the warehouse. A number of the Samsung cameras also provide surveillance for the exterior of the building and are protected from fogging by external heated housings (Dennard 506 and Vista VHE23LL). The site also utilises Vista infra-red lamps (VIR50) to ensure that images can be captured effectively at night.

The drivers reporting area - one of the most critical rooms in the building –is protected by two Vista high resolution internal dome cameras (VVRD4V9DN), which provide discreet but comprehensive surveillance.

Externally there is an array of Pelco, Vista and Dennard functional domes with Pelco Spectra II being a predominant feature of the original CCTV however where more detailed cover has been required we have utilised the advance technology of the Vista Power Dome and the Dennard 2060 dome each with their enhanced night viewing. The Dome cameras are further backed by a extensive number of static cameras from the Vista ANPR (Number Plate Recognition) covering the double sliding gates (also installed as part of the security redesign) to Samsung cameras covering the fuelling bay, wash bay and general parking areas and approaches.

The entire CCTV system now incorporates a total of 58 cameras all of which are linked through the Access, Intruder and external perimeter protection in order to deliver live images to the remote monitoring CCTV station (Crimewatch Systems) on detection of movement in and around the property during key hours of the day, night and weekend.

Intruder Alarms for a Hostile Environment

One of the key features evident throughout the warehouse is a substantial array of Pyronix dual technology detectors and Honeywell DT900 warehouse detectors. Those sited within the warehouse are designed to survive hostile environments such as rapid and extreme temperature changes. The various loading doors, fire exits and staff entrances are covered by these detectors, securing every approach. Each door is further protected by surface mounted contacts while each main entrance or specific key area can be set and unset by its own Intruder Keypad governing that area while linking the entire warehouse as a whole.

Pyronix DTs along with Honeywell DT’s also cover the office area-controlled reception and front office areas while Dome cameras and ACT access act as the control mechanisms to each area.

The Texecom Premier 166 control panel that coordinates the Intruder security solution is sited in a lockable secure cupboard and is connected via a standalone network the main building communications room where we have a designated cabinet for the integrated solution of Access and CCTV. A GSM notification system, Redcare phone line and dedicated commercial ADSL connection delivers an array of communication and notification routes to the two monitoring stations.

The Intruder system was as important as the CCTV and Access Control elements of the security solution. The location of the perimeter protection was also critical, in order to ensure a Police response to the right kind of suspected security breach. We needed to be included on the Cambridgeshire Police constabulary’s approved list of installers.

Access Control

All staff and visitors to the site be it on foot or vehicle is controlled by NACD and Videx Intercom Systems and ACT Access Control with entry points located at the Automated Pedestrian Gated staff entrance, Sliding Gate Truck entrance (gates provided by Parking Facilities), Warehouse staff entrance, Drivers reporting entrance and main office reception. No one moves in and out of the building without verification via the Access System which is intern linked to the CCTV for identification purposes. We have also utilised a time and attendance feature within the ACT Access System to deliver clocking in and out of warehouse staff and provided a formatted spreadsheet to the payroll department.

Benefits Delivered

General Manager, John Butler, says that the decision to install such a comprehensive and custom designed security system was essential to site security and client comfort and, since inception, it has been a key factor in the winning of further storage contracts and has benefitted from award of the highest security classification issued within the DHL network. The original solution made inherent the demands for additions, repositioning and upgrades be taken into consideration at the minimum cost and inconvenience. John comments that the payback on the project was just over twelve months, which is outstanding, and that does not include the many side benefits, such as employee attendance/ payroll recording.
